ABSTRACT

Consumer purchase intention towards luxury brands is influenced by various factors, both internal and external. The purpose of this study is to examine the values that drive consumers to purchase luxury brands during COVID-19. The study seeks to achieve four main objectives by examining four universal values, namely openness to change, conservation, self-enhancement, and self-transcendence, and their impact on purchase intention. We collected primary data from upper-middle-class youth and young adults through a questionnaire. Previous research shows that aspirational youth, including GenZ and millennials, are the primary consumers of luxury brands today. To analyze the data, we used Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) – version 25 and Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS) – version 23. The results demonstrate that self-direction, stimulation, hedonism, achievement, conformity restraint, universalism, benevolence, and preservation have significant relationships with purchase intention. However, no significant relationship was observed between power attainment, security, and purchase intention.

ABSTRACT

Purpose>Disturbances in terms of major crises such as pandemics, fluctuations in demand and oil price, energy consumption and supply chain can significantly impair the maintenance programs effectiveness and efficiency. Hence, there is an urgent need for an agile asset performance management (AAPM) framework.Design/methodology/approach>This paper's main objective is to design a comprehensive framework for an AAPM system that sustains the desired asset performance by reacting efficiently, quickly and intelligently to the changes in the operating context parameters and asset health conditions. Such a framework is adaptive to changes in scenarios and aims to systematise the decision support process, considering different objectives.Findings>The development of the proposed framework has led to identifying an innovative way of seamless integration between crucial reliability and asset management tools. Also, the methodology implementation is expected to promote the practical use of its reliability tools and enable asset stakeholders to break silo working for clear communication around asset performance.Originality/value>The implementation of the AAPM framework follows a new approach developed during this research and coined by the authors as the “8S approach.”

ABSTRACT

Orientation: The concept of employee engagement has attracted the attention of both academics and practitioners due to its importance in enhancing the performance and profitability of organisations. Research Purpose: This article examines the impact of human resource management (HRM) practices on employee engagement in the Egyptian context. The purpose of this article was to develop an in-depth understanding of the concepts of HRM practices and their impact on employee engagement, and the moderating role of strategy implementation. Motivation for the study: Given the scarcity of research that examines the impact of HRM practices on employee engagement especially in the banking sector, this article examines how different HRM practices can influence the level of employee engagement. Research approach/design and method: For the purpose of answering the research questions and testing the proposed hypotheses, a quantitative research approach was adopted by distributing a questionnaire to 228 employees from the banking sector in Egypt. Main findings: The findings indicated that HRM practices had a positive significant impact on employee engagement. In particular, these practices included selection and hiring, job design as well as reward and payment systems. However, the findings showed that the strategic implementation does not moderate the relationship between HRM practices and employee engagement. Practical/managerial implications: This article provides some guidelines for organisations to follow to fully utilise the power of employee engagement by applying effective HRM practices. Contribution/value-add: The contribution of this study is that it is one of the few studies that have so far investigated this relationship in the Egyptian environment.

ABSTRACT

Pandemic viruses have historically caused tremendous damage to lives and livelihoods. The coronavirus, COVID-19, has proven to be a significant issue around the world. In this paper it is argued that systems of controlling similar types of disasters need to be improved through learning from past experience and from others, as well as through improved modelling for better decision making. In doing so, the focus will be on resilience modelling and learning from incidents. Therefore, in this paper, first the introduction deals with hybrid approaches in operational research highlighting the differences between hybrid modelling and hybrid models. Second, an introduction to mathematical modelling of epidemics is provided and how such modelling leads to certain types of public health modelling is demonstrated. Third, resilience modelling will be discussed as a complimentary type of modelling, where concepts related to robustness, redundancy, resourcefulness, and rapidity are introduced. Fourth, resilience modelling will be extended to new principles taking COVID-19 as an example for the analysis. Fifth, the analysis will then be used to compare degrees of resilience for different countries. Finally, other modelling approaches for managing - and learning from - pandemics, in terms of root cause analysis, bowtie modelling and safety barriers, are proposed.
